Fabric Structures

Gas filtration fabrics are typically either woven fabric or non-woven fabrics

  • Non-woven fabrics are by far the more popular type as they cover a broader application base and generally deliver better performance.
  • Non-wovens are felted fabrics and most are needled.
  • Needled felts are typically supported on a scrim (fabric mesh) to improve structural strength.
  • Cheaper (inferior) non-scrim supported fabrics are also available, but should be avoided.
  • Dual denier (density) fabrics are those made from fibres of two distinctly difference fibre diameters. This provides improved air flow capacity and filtration performance, particularly for fine dusts.

    Fabric Surface Treatments & Finishes

  • Singed - Flame heat singing and hot rolling of needled felts. Smoothes out the filtration surface and improves dust release ability.
  • Glazed/Eggshell - Similar to Singed but smoother to increase dust release, especially for more adherent dusts, but produces a higher pressure drop.
  • Acrylic - A thin film of acrylic coating applied to the fabric to produce a smooth almost glossy finish. Aids dust release.
  • Olephobic - A chemical treatment completely through the fabric to help the fabric repel oily substances in the gas being filtered.
  • Silicon - Application of silicon completely throught the fabric to help dust release and repel oily substances and water.
  • PTFE impregnation - Application of PTFE completely throught the fabric. Excellent at repelling oily substances and water.
  • PTFE lamination - Lamination of a PTFE onto the fabric to significantly improve dust release as well as repel oily substances and water.
  • ePTFE - Proprietary fabric enhancement process of W.L. Gore. Provides superior dust release as well as repel oily substances and water.
  • Blue Max - Proprietary fabric enhancement process of BHA/GE that provides improved acid resistance and reduces fiber-to-fiber abrasion. It is also resistant to alkaline attack and improves fiber encapsulation especially glass fibres.
